That column writer doesn't know what he's talking about. He needs to buy a clue. Despite his intuition, the laws of thermodynamics prevail.
You want all the ventilation you can reasonably get, both Summer and Winter, soffits, ends, ridge, etc. Heat rises. There are no exceptions.
If there is any temperature differential between the lower soffit vent and the upper ridge vent then the hot air will rise out the ridge vent. In fact, having the side vents will simply cool the air in the upper section of the attic and may in fact allow the soffit vents even more incentive to draw air (cold on top, hot below, the hot *will* rise).
The soffit vents will only stop drawing when the air tempurature in the soffit entry (lower) matches the air temperature at the top of the soffit. Once that happens, you no longer have a (temporary) need for venting. FYI, it rarely happens, unless you turn the heat way, way down in Winter and/or have a very well insulated/plugged ceiling below the attic... and have no solar heat gain through the top.
