Since you say you're a novice at long runs, one thing you need to think about is how much road time you can do safely. Lots of people pull all nighters and "drive straight through" but it's not much fun and it's pretty dangerous. Been there done that. Not again. But, OTOH, I've also started well-rested in the morning and done 1,000 miles solo in a single day, about 6 AM to midnight, with several stops to eat and take a break. You can split the driving, so you could go further.
Theoetically, the 3,000 mile run, averaging 60-ish (this is running 75-80 including stops for gas, food, etc.) means 50 hours of driving time over 3.5 days (84 hours). You can generally drive faster out west, which gives you an edge on the time-speed-distance game. I'd start at breakfast, go til about 9 pm. Stop, repeat. Since fatigue is cumulative, I'd do longer days at the beginning and shorter on the end. And try to time things so you avoid Philly/NY/NJ at rush hour. Also beware other big metro areas at prime commute times.
I noted in my other post is that you have to pay attention to the weather. The northern plains weather can get gnarly (I-90) so you may want to drop down to I-80 or even I-70 if there are storms to the north. But brace yourself--the midwest is *really* boring.
