I lost my parents in '91 and '94, and I don't think a person ever truly gets over their parent's absence - especially at certain times each year.
Regarding the inheritence, I recommend following three of the five steps Money Magazine published years ago relative to lottery winnings. The applicable steps are: 1) place the money in a short-term guaranteed investment such as 6-month treasury bills; 2) interview every financial planner/tax advisor/accountant you can locate during those six months to find one you feel comfortable with; and finally, 3) turn the money over to the professional at maturity of the bills for them to manage with & for you.
Best of luck to you and your family.
Just for information - the other two steps (#1 and #3 in Money's sequence) when suddenly dealing with millions of dollars were: treat yourself to something small you have always wanted (a new Saab?); and disappear for a few weeks on a long trip to let things calm down and escape from the publicity.
