They should in a very stern way informed you before the job that the old windshield MAY break when removing and that they ARE NOT responsible for that and you would have to pay for the windshield in that case.
It is not an easy job to remove an old weathered windshield and my glass shops don't happily jump on it without informing me about the risks and being prepared to pay for a new one.
It can be stress fractures in the glass that is not visible to the eye and when the bond is cut, the stress is released and cracks the windshield.
The other things sounds like they didn't do a good job with and you should not be happy with that.
But also, $50.00 and 1 hour is in the low end of scale so you might have gotten what you paid for.
