It almost seems like newer PCs that run faster and have more stuff tend to die more often. My old old computer (3.1) is still alive and runs fine. My old computer (Windows 98) is also alive and still running. My two most recent computers (XP) are both on their 2nds HDs.
Last year when my HD died, if I hadn't stored all of my important documents on an online webserver through my university, I would have lost an entire semester's worth of work. I don't back up my HD, but ANYTHING important gets stored online and on a USB drive. So even if you decide not to back up your drive, at least sign up for web storage to store your most important files.
