OT: RAID 1 question

If one of the two drives in a RAID 1 setup fails what are the options? Of course, RAID can be rebuilt. Is the functioning RAID 1 drive also readable by itself? Can one simply slave the drive or put it in an external enclosure and read the data?
I ask this because I am reading about the complexity of data recovery when a RAID setup or proprietary controller goes bad. If the good RAID drive is readable all by itself in RAID 1 then I guess this isn't really a concern. It sounds from what I have read that the good drives are often not readable by themselves in anything other than RAID 1.
