Returning to the essence of hdm's initial message, adding a blanket or two is very wise. It also doesn't hurt to include some safety flares if you're headed out in expected or known bad weather or into a lesser traveled area. And, of course, no one should travel (even to the convenience store) without a cell phone (not that you need to be on it the whole time, mind you).
I'm a 31 year volunteer firefighter and know a bit about travel safety. The other smart thing you can do is ALWAYS let someone (preferrably at your destination) know when you're leaving, you route of travel (basics) and when you expect to arrive. Oh, and know where you're going to begin with.
As for the Kim family tragedy, yes Mr. Kim's decision to leave the vehicle was certainly a major factor in his death. However, one can only imagine how frustrated and concerned he (and his wife) was about their plight. Although I didn't hear, I can only imagine that cell phone reception must have been virtually non-existent where they became stranded, which shows how we really cannot take these things for granted.
Lastly, I've also spent some professional time in and around "The Media" and, as such, take some exception to Drew's disparaging commentary. Sure, there are always those who go for the "easy headline." But you can bet that, especially at the local level, hundreds of media folks were trying to do what they could to help find the Kim family.
