a blanket, flashlight, PPG (Personal protective gear) reflective vest, extra clothes, jacket, shoes. extra batteries, roll of TP, a stadium seat. they all fit into an old milk crate, and don't take up a lot of room in my hatchback. The MRE's will last forever, freeze dried food might need to be reconstituted, so carry 2 or 3 bottles of water. My wife says a cord of wood to keep warm and some matches...(well maybe not the cord of wood!)
hope this helps get you started.
Jim
