while I feel terrible about what happend to Mr. Kim, and grateful that his family survived, all of that "hero" nonsense from the posts below is exactly that, nonsense.
Did the man not remember how long he had been driving without seeing signs of life or shelter? Why leave the car at all? Expecially why leave the car, located on a MARKED ROAD, and cut an unknown path into the underbrush? Sure, maybe it would be realistic to be able to hike out of a situation like that with the proper gear and training, but the stories I saw said he didn't even have a proper coat or shoes. Why leave the road in a situation like that? He was taking a shortcut to where? In what crazy alternate universe is an unclothed man able to withstand any amount of time in freezing temperatures without real gear, and where an off the road path is something useful?
It's a very sensitive situation whenever someone passes too soon so I had decided I wasn't going to post and correct at that "hero" BS below. But really, instead of gushing about how much of a hero the guy was for doing the wrong thing in a critical situation, the true value is in realizing what NOT to do in a situation like that. He wasn't a hero, he was a guy who got himself in a bad situation and unfortunately did the wrong thing--even though he tried really hard, it was still the wrong thing to do.
I've done some hunting/hiking/camping and have a little gear, but I'm far from a survivalist, and to me (even without the luxury of hindsight) it seems like a pretty obvious decision not to trek away from your only shelter when you know that it's not possible to reach anyplace with more shelter--especially when the distance you could possibly travel, and the quality of marks that you could possibly leave are so limited in comparison to the vastness of the landscape. If someone was looking hard enough to find any trail that might last for a few miles, they're looking hard enough to find the car.
This post is not meant in disrespect in any way, but I believe is the proper way to make sense of the situation and learn from it.
There is no truth in media, so it could be that I'm off on some of the facts, so please correct me if any of the above is wrong.
