You talk about never even going to the convenience store without a cell phone. Well, gee, why not a GPS, parachute flares, weapons and ammunition?
Cell phones are great and I usually have mine with me. But I sure don't depend on it to get me out of trouble. Sure, I've called for AAA when a car died on me, but I could just as easily have gone to a pay phone. But the fact is, when you have a really desperate situation, like the Kims, chances are the cell phone won't work (Murphy's Law in action). For example, there's a route I take every couple months through the mountains where there are few houses and no cell reception for about 30 miles. Having been on that route in blizzards on three occasions I sure don't rely on technology to save my butt if the dragons come to call.
Here in NH, people die in the White Mountains for a variety of reasons (boneheadedness being leading cause of death), and in recent years many assume help is just a cell phone call away. Until they find they don't get a signal or can't really tell the operator where they are. This happens winter and summer.
By all means, have a cell phone handy. But don't bet your life on it.
