What you say is absolutely true but Chaz isn't wrong either. Sometimes everything (or enough) does go wrong. Few are ever truely fully prepared. No matter how conservative and careful we are we put ourselves out there at risk all the time. This is life. We all push on at times when we would have been better off to hang it up. Even if it is to get out of the situation we are in. It might be driving through a down pour, on snow and ice covered roads in a blizzard, or other aspects and areas of our lives. These can all go very badly. Daily life can go very badly.
Your message is of course very true. Common sense and due caution need to enter into everything we do. Understanding the situation is imporatnt. Their actions or inactions may have been inappropriate. Even so it can all go wrong or we can get trapped out unexpectedly in conditions we would not have ventured.
I sense some of what has been said in this thread is really a psychological defense and justificiiton. They were foolish so bad things happened to them. That couldn't happen to me b/c I have so much more comment sense, skill, and wouldn't be foolish. This is a very common phenomena in such situations.
