Over the past few years with low interest rates the economy has been driven by people refinacing their homes and taking monry out to buy other thing, cars, TV, etc. We're talking Billions here. As interest rates increase and the housing market slows and values decline there is less equity to pull out and/or owners don't refinance because the rates are now higher than what they already have. Thus, there is less money pouring into the general economy.
