It sounds (to me) like the OS is corrupted. I believe if you re-install Windows at this point it'll wipe out everything you've got saved on there. The easiest thing to do at this point is get the new computer (or use a friend's) & plug your old drive into it. (You'll have to move the pin jumper from the "Master" position to the "Slave" position before it will be recognized by the new computer.) That way you can pull whatever you want off it without having to boot it up. Then, while it's still hooked up, reformat the drive & wipe it clean of everything (including viruses & other nasties). At that point you can install any OS or use it as a backup drive for the new computer.
