It's funny how these "rules" come into being. Probably, someone once had a 98 year old Latin teacher who explained that "preposition" means "placed before" (just as the Greek "prothesis"), so a preposition must come before the object in English, too.
This is, of course, total nonsense; why should grammatical rules, that are applicable to Latin or Greek, be applied to English? But the schoolboy believed his schoolmaster and repeated the same rule again and again to his poor students - and so on. And thus it becomes a "rule" - although both Shakespeare and Churchill appear not to have agreed.
But, of course, it's true that it may be a good idea to avoid such a syntax if, for example, you are applying for a job and the guy at the other end "follows the rules" ...
