Microsoft Media Player which comes standard with Windows XP will, I believe, convert a CD track into the aforementioned MP3 format which is readable by your PC and other portable digital players.
An Ipod is just a household brand of MP3 player. The concept is the same as all other mp3 players with the exception of file formats. Apple wants to retain some degree control over what users do with the songs purchased through their online store "itunes" and are stored in a different [more resrictive] format than other brands of mp3 players (samsung, panasonic, creative labs) Ipods also support "podcasts" or no-cost audio or video broadcasts that you can upload to your ipod and take it on the go... I watch ABC news on my commute home and CNN's videos from around the world...Ipod might be easier to grasp because the itunes store sells everything....you can also convert your CD's to Ipod readable digital sound files using Itunes.....just pop it in and click yes...
