I'm not sure a PDA is what you really need... most decent cell phones these days have pretty good contact management and most even offer basic calendaring features. Unless you have a huge number of contacts or events to handle, I suspect your average cell phone will do the job. I've used nothing but for years and years and never felt like it was an obstacle... most decent phones these days will even synchronize with Outlook if you happen to use that application.
My job now requires me to carry a Blackberry, and I've found it somewhat convenient since it's constantly synchronized with our Exchange server, but to be honest I still prefer (and primarily use) my cell phone to keep track of my days. It's smaller, lasts longer on batteries, and I don't look like an obnoxious technie fondling my PDA all the time. Which, I'll admit, is somewhat ironic since I *am* an obnoxious techie... anyway... The Blackberry spends most of its time on my desk or in the center console of the Saab...
Don't let anyone tell you that you need to spend $500 on overhyped technology to run your life. Most folks don't know thing one about how to use this stuff to good effect anyway. I'd start with a $100 Motorola and see where it gets you.
