Google "Toyota and Recalls" you get a lot of links from last year:
I can only post one live one here so you'll have to cut and paste the other.
This is the non-linked one: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13046349/
Two thoughts:
It could be argued that since they sell a lot of cars, it is sort of logical their recalls could be larger. So how did GM and Ford do? How about the other Japanese? How about the Euro brands?
HOWEVER, Toyota makes such a big deal about quality and how many Yotas sold since 1988 are still on the road that they are vulnerable to news like this. Or maybe they are currently pushing quality and longevity so hard *because* of the recalls.
Still, they have created the perception that Yotas don't wear out or break. It's largely marketing BS.
What would be more interesting to know is...
how recalls as a percentage of total sales compares to other makes.
how many cars from each manufacturer, made in a given year (say 1988) are still on the road.
how much it costs to own a Toyota over, say 10 years/150K miles, compared to other makes.
There's a Corolla ad that touts high mileage Corollas. One guy has gone 330K miles in his since about 1993. How nice for him. I can't imagine having to drive that many miles in one of those things. (If I do 300 miles in a rental Corolla I can't wait to get out of it.) And I also wonder just how much of it has been replaced.
