If the point is that it won't always match up with peak demand that is undoutedly true. However, the day vs night example cited as already mentioned doesn't on average hold up it seems. However, wind is just part of the energy mix. It is not a magic bullet. We need to look at it broadly.
We have a base line electric energy need. We require extra capacity for peak periods. This as always been the case. That doesn't mean wind can't be relevant when available as the first consumed source. Other sources change in output and shift on and off line today and would continue to do so. Yes this might require what appears to be increased extra capacity. But energy security, stability, and the environment figure into this and need to be part of the calculation. By reducing usage of limted resouces and extending their availabilty into the future we buy time to create a more secure energy future. Not to mention pollution reduction and health gains that result.
Incidently around here at least cold weather isn't that important for peak electric energy demand. Our local peak is during summer in the afternoon and very early evening. Hot whether stresses the system where I am at. There is plenty of capacity to cover cold conditions. For other parts of the country this relationship might be different.
