Saab OEM filter required? I've never heard that... Interesting overall article about sludge, but the advice by the "experts" is a bit extreme, and basically rules out tons of vehicles. "So some experts said the smartest thing for consumers was just to stay away from engines with sludge reputations."
Also, I've never heard that Saab will only honor the Sludge Warranty if you use their filters? This is new to me, my understanding was documented proof of oil/filter changes at least every 10K miles.
"A lack of adequate oil changes is the explanation for damage given by Audi, Lexus, Saab, Toyota and VW. Yet unlike Chrysler and Dodge, those automakers have formal compensation programs for sludge damage, although in some cases consumers must provide detailed service records — and in the case of Saab, must have used oil filters sold only by the company."
