189,800 miles on my 9-5 with no sludge... Of course I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I only use top quality synthetic oils, but have never used a Saab filter.
Back when my 2000 was new, and the A/C Delco PF-53 was externally identical to the Saab blue filter, I used the PF-53's. After two major modifications to the PF-53 (which appear to have significantly decreased the amount of filter media) I now use Motorcraft FL400S filters, or the Purolator Plus equivalent. This is the same filter as Chrysler's Turbo 2.4 litre engine used in the PT Cruiser, and nearly every Ford truck V8 engine.
I visually inspected the upper end of my engine pretty thoroughly when I replace all head bolts in early 2005 and saw no evidence of any sludge. Most (maybe all) reports posted on this site regarding known engine sludge also reported gross neglect of recommended oil change intervals, i.e. 20,000 miles on the original factory fill!
