This is related to something on the 9-5 board about needing more towing capacity than the 9-5 can handle. Plenty minivans seems to have standard/optional class III hitches, but then their 3500lb limit drops when there are more than two passengers. I think the VW Eurovan could go up to 4400lb. I don't think the limit is the engine because there are V6 SUVs with 5000+lb ratings (usually 5000 is the limit on an automatic transmission). Clearly Saab has some disadvantage with only a 4 cylinder engine and front wheel drive, but I don't see any cars with say a class III, 5000lb rating (certainly a 300C/Magnum should be able to haul that weight). Even the argument that a car is too light seems invalid. SUVs can often tow 1.5 times their weight. So a 9-5 should be safe at almost 6000lb.
Does it all just come down to marketing and higher margins on SUVs?
