I have little doubt that the 9-5 has the power to tow more.
I have little doubt that the brakes can't stop the car well with a greater load.
I have little doubt that the frame would not be strong enough to tow a greater load.
I do however believe that the greater tow weight would leave you with a broken tranny.
Trucks and SUVs have one thing in common that you sedan does not, they have a stronger tranny and almost always have a transmition cooler.
Vehicles are designed for a gross weight, you can tow more than the tow limit if you loss weight else where to remain under the gross vehicle weight. It may varry greatly on what the limiting factor is, an SUV with a V6 maybe limited by power, a truck maybe limited by brakes.
