OT: Will Vista become the next Windows ME? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 19 Feb 2007 03:45:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
One of my brothers-in-law bought a new computer last week that came pre-loaded with Vista as the O/S.
I swear my 5 year old Athalon running XP-Home is an order of magnitude faster than this new machine on Vista!
The printer that came packaged in the bundle is incompatible with Vista - a triple "Shame On You" to H-P, Best Buy, and Microsoft. Downloading the driver patch from H-P only provided us with a test page, still no actual printing function.
The machine is excrutiatingly slow, and gives no hourglass or spinning graphic to indicate it is doing anything. Geek Squad spent two hours setting it up - having them set up the printer too would have been an extra charge!
The version of M/S Word (I think it was Word and not Works) that came with the machine is very different than past versions. There are no drop-down tabs such as File, Edit, etc. Common commands such as "Select All" appear to be gone forever. So much screen space is consumed by the new pallettes of commands that his 17-inch monitor was nearly useless - plan on buying at least a 19-inch size when using Vista.
The only good feature I saw was the neatness of the rear of the CPU. Power cord, Ethernet, USB to printer, and USB to Monitor were the only cords visible. The main power "ON" is integral to the monitor. The keyboard and mouse must conect to the monitor too.
Guess I better learn how to use Linux quick. I sure don't want to migrate from XP to Vista based upon yesterday's experience.
