Shoe suggestions?

I am looking for a good walking shoe that can be used to walk literally all day (early morning till late night day after day) on stone pavers. I plan to use this while traveling. The shoe must be comfortable, have good traction, and be supportive enough to use with a backpack (say 40lbs or so).
I tried Merrell Chameleons on a previous trip. They were a disaster and I ended up wearing my Chaco sandals most of the time. The Merrells were uncomfortable, had too thin a sole, and too soft/fast wearing a sole. They seemed better designed for a dirt trail the Europe’s stone sidewalks. They lacked and sort of shock absorption and made my feet truly sore, not just tired.
I have tried on Rockport World Tour shoes, but I think the sole is too thin and the shoe unsupportive enough for my purposes.
I have some Red Wings, but I wouldn’t want to use them for this because the sole design isn’t aggressive enough or durable enough for the stone pavers, the leather tends to stretch with use (and that is without the added load of a pack), and my feet are often tired when standing just part of a day in them.
I’m planning to try on the Havana Joe Classic.
Any suggestions? Has anyone had to use a shoe in a similar manner? It seems even a good shoe is nearly worn out after just a few weeks of this heavy usage. Many shoes are well padded in the store, but are not comfortable under the constant loads of daily use.
