Sounds like you have a great trip ahead of you.

I put 200+ miles onto a pair of Raichle hiking boots last summer (Granted, I carried between 38-55 pounds, depending on the food demands, over loose rocks and on rocky trails.) I think that type of boot would be over-kill for your needs. If I were you, I'd be looking at a light-hiker. Decide if waterproof-ness is desirable or not. Modern Gore-tex breathes a lot better than older waterproofing techniques, but a nice breathable shoe can be much more comfortable than a waterproof breathable shoe.

I've never worn Merrels, but I'm a little surprised to hear that they let you down. (My Raichles had seen several hundred miles prior to my 200-mile trek this past summer, and I just about wore them out getting on towards the last day... I just bought the same ones last weekend. Hope to get 6-8 more good years out of those. The granite in CA's high country is very hard on shoes... much like cobbles in comparison to dirt trails.)

I'd check out REI~dot~com for some possibilities. Walking shoes rarely offer enough support (through the sole) for carrying weight. And, as turrbo mentions, softer rubber soles wear too fast.

I wear Rockports to work, and I love them. I would never consider using them to cover long distances. I've had my current Rockports for over 8 years, and they are so very comfortable. Lately, I've been into my Dansko Clogs. Another shoe I'd not wear with a pack on. Okay, back on-topic...

As I'm sure you know, make sure that the shoe fits your foot pretty well from the get-go. A shoe whose heel pocket is too spacious, or one with too much or too little volume is a bad shoe, even if it's made by the very best company out there.

Best of luck, and enjoy. Where all are you headed?

~Peter
Below is a picture of a few miles... maybe 115 miles into the trip.
