30 years ago I first used synthetic (amsoil...fair disclosure, lifetime dealer am I) in a four stroke engine. In 84 I first used it in a 175hp johnson outboard turning maybe 6600 rpm at 64mph in a mastercraft ski boat (boat specially ordered, most mastercrafts are inboard). The upshot is that the synthetic oil at the same injector settings burned cleaner and eliminated the hesitation (light plug fouling) that was endemic to even the best Mercury injector oils (fageddabout johnson injector oils) used on johnson v4 engines. At 250 hours the plugs were new-clean and replacement (surface gap CD-fired) plugs made no difference in engine running or mileage.
The manual is right...use the best synthetic you can find on your new chainsaw. As far as 89 octane goes, I don't know. You should really listen to the owner's manual.
