First of all, nice comments on the giraffe in the refrigerator post above. I like it.
It is a cost issue, but also an infrastructure issue. We have a very capable means to supply gas and diesel to the motoring public. What other forms of fuel can be supplied in quantities large enough to mobilize the motoring public? Even though ethanol is less energy-dense than gasoline, it doesn't mean is useless.
FFV have been around. Someday, gas will cost more per BTU than Ethanol or other energy storage medium (Hydrogen? Batteries? etc...). At that point, if the infrastructure remains unchanged, we will be hurting.
I'd love to see some magical invention come along that makes personal transport completely environment-friendly. I'll still ride my bike to work because it's better for me than sitting in a car. (I realize I'm lucky to be able to ride my bike to work fairly regularly.) Until the magical solution is reached, I'd like to see choices. The automotive revolution is upon us, and I'm excited to see what happens. Let's hope that some sort of long-term energy policy is allowed to be brought to fruition.
I don't think Ethanol is a solution to our petroleum problems, but it's one option that could find a useful niche, and a technology worth pursuing.
In the meantime, and as I watch, I'll continue to enjoy my 9000 Aero.
