I have been and "indi" for 4 years now. I tried druming up business myself, but for it very dificult to land an assignment. Most larger firms look to recruiting firms to weed out candidates and deal with payroll issues. They just don't want tobe bothered, especially these days where background and drug tests are pretty standard.
I have been an "indi' at a major bank now for 3.5 years via a third party. I lso look for additional work outrside the bank, and consider that as gravy. Normally very specific and short term, and not very reliable.
It take a great deal of discipline, thick skin and savy to be on your own. As Noel stated, you wear many hats and always have to be on the look for your next opportunity.
There is a certain level of freedom and pride being on your own however. I'm finding more of the "smaller jobs" now as I've gained experience and a rep as an "indi". But it does take time, money and effort.
Best of Luck.....Keep us posted.
