Well speaking from experience, I say it is a great thing to do, but it is hard.
I've done 1099 work, W2 work, Corp to Corp. etc....
What I found that worked for me may not work for you. I used various consulting firms as a sales force. Yes they took a percentage of what I could've made had I found the job the job on my own, but I hate sales and going out to find the gigs. Every minute spent doing that is time away from doing what I like and making money.
I too started at a low rate (still better than salaried) but each new gig I'd raise my rate. I did not care what the firm charged the client, I considered that a cost of doing business. I had a minimum that I wanted and if they would not give it to me I'd go somewhere else.
I found the higher you set your rate the more works comes in (once you have established a name for yourself). At one point I had more work than I knew what to do with.
