Well I find the design much fresher and dynamic than the previous generation 9-3SS. As for AWD being a marketing tool - well of course it is. The purpose is to sell more cars, not fewer! But on high power cars it's not just a pointless gadget to "make average drivers feel safe". I guess you've never tried to do full throttle runs from standstill in a FWD car with 220+ HP? Wheelspin galore. There is a reason why 99% of all sports cars either have RWD or AWD.
I do have an example of a pointless use of AWD: some small Suzuki models they sell over here with a tiny <100 HP engine and AWD. Now that's a waste of weight and engineering!
With over 250 HP the limit of FWD is reached and if Saab wants to be seen as a viable competitor to the other premium car makers (where 300 HP seems to be the minimum now) then it needs a high powered car that doesn't just either smoke the front tires all the time or go into seizures with the traction control light blinking.
Saab still has superior ergonomics and reliability. At least compared to the other euro car makers. If fuel economy is essential to you, then there's no one forcing you to get the top of the line Aero with AWD. You can just get a 2.0T with FWD. Or hopefully the TTiD will be introduced in the US too...
