Unfortunately, I did have to learn the hard way (see my previous post).

I went to the local fire extinguisher store (I was previously unaware such a place existed) and picked up a 2.5 lbs ABC extinguisher for the car, as well as 5 lbs extinguishers for my house and my mom's house. Really, given what a safety feature an extinguisher is everyone should have at least one, but it had never crossed my mind before.

They also sell small extinguishers at discount stores, but the proper ones seemed to be much sturdier and had a gauge to show the charge level. It also included a bracket for easy mounting in the car, though I found the 2.5 lbs model fit snuggly under the passenger seat. Be careful though - I imagine one could be a deadly projectile in an accident if left loose.

I would really encourage everyone to go out today and pick up extinguishers for your home and cars.
