We recently did some shopping & comparisons on dishwashers.
The specialty appliance sales associate was very helpful in
educating us on the differences in dishwashers.
They sell a wide range from $300-$1500.
She didn't push any one type.
Here's a summary of what we learned.
There are bascially two different type of systems used.
Bosch, Asko, LG use a hot water booster to bring the water temp
up to good cleaning temps of 140 degrees. Good, if you don't keep your WH temp way up. They also use less water & less soap. They are Energy Star rated, but the drying is not as good as others because of it.
GE, Whirlpool, Amana, KA, Jenn-Air, Fridgidaire have a heating ring at the bottom of the tub to heat the water. The ring functions as a heating element. Drawback is that unless you run the water from your sink for awhile to get the hot water to the DW, you are sending cold water at the beginning of the wash cycle until the water splashes down on the ring & gets heated. These systems depend more on soap to clean rather than high temp. water.
Like you, we also wanted the SS tub. It is standard across the line in a Bosch, whereas you have to move up the line, beyond the price of a base Bosch, to get a SS tub in the other brands. So, we're getting a Bosch,
SS tub, white face, 4 cleaning cycles, for $570.
