....or maybe, given the present state of our judicial system, you ARE better off consulting a lawyer at Home Depot!
My son was posted overseas in the Armed Forces after bringing a car he bought in NY back to IL and getting it retitled and licensed here. As his home address was listed here, the state of NY writes wanting the old plates, quoting me all kinds of chapter and verse. I informed them that I had already destroyed the plates. Then they started huffing pretty badly, so I ignored them. This was 6 years ago. My son -still in Armed Forces, about to be discharged- is home on leave a few months ago, and goes to get an IL license, but he has a stop against his name- it appears that IL and NY are engaged in cooperation (I prefer the word "conspiracy") and it all goes back to the two pieces of tin they didn't get back in 2001. Luckily, when he went back to NY, he was able to pay a $25 fine, and say that his dad was a "cultural throwback," and get out of it. I told him I'd be more than happy to send the NY DMV a photo proving beyond all shadow of a doubt that I'm a throwback.....
