I don't own one, but I spent our recent vacation back East taking LOTS of pictures of our new grandson with my daughter-in-law's D80. What phenomenal pictures! Even makes me look like I know what I'm doing, and I know better. I don't really know anything about the D40, but it's gotten some very good reviews.
All of this being said, two things:
My daughter-in-law's lenses are from the set with her older Nikon film SLR, which she used when she was working as a newspaper photographer. They are GOOD Nikon lenses, which I understand to be the biggest part getting good photos with any camera. Whatever you buy, be sure to check the reviews of the LENSES, not just the camera.
The other thing, so you may better judge my opinions- I take pictures with a small Canon PowerShot S3 IS, which simply falls into my handiness quotient. When we travel, we use something even smaller- a Nikon Coolpix 8500. I used to own SLRs, but I've stepped back, so I pretend to no particular expertise here.
