Digital SLR newbie, buying advice? Posted by IanC [Email] (#139) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IanC) on Mon, 9 Jul 2007 17:07:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi,
Getting ready to dip into the Digital SLR world for upcoming wedding (mine, but want nice pics with my own camera) and subsequent honeymoon to Bar Harbor, ME. Looking at the low end, I'm not a camera fanatic and mostly interested in the faster response, better image quality, and potential to change lenses (I have used a 35mm manual focus in the past and I do like taking pictures, just don't see it being a very serious hobby).
I've narrowed my search down to the Nikon D40 and the Olympus E-500. Similar pricing ($600) at Ritz Camera gets Nikon with 18-55mm kit lens or Olympus with similar lens plus 40-180 or so zoom. I prefer the size and feel of the Nikon and it is a more recent camera (better processor?) but the two lens kit of the Olympus is tempting.
I haven't spent much time looking at the Canon's, the D40 seems similar enough and is cheaper that I would go that route. Looked at the Pentax K100d and while I like the feature set (ability to use AA if needed and image stabilization) it was a much bigger and heavier camera (probably because of those features) and not as appealing as the others.
Sorry for the long message, but I know there are a lot of photographers on this site whose opinion I will value highly.
Thanks in advance,
Ian
