I don't know enough to advise you on the camera (someone else recommended that you check out dpreview.com -- good advice!) but I do have a suggestion on where to buy.

Check out the website of H1photo.com. Their prices are better, and they are an authorized USA Nikon dealer (no grey market goods.) I just did a quick check on their price of the D40 with the 18-55mm lens, and it is $525. That price also includes a factory (Nikon) 2-year extended warranty (3-years total.) And, unless you live in the same state that H1 is in (Pennsylvania) you'll also save on sales tax (but you may pay $10-20 or so for shipping.) H1 also sells the camera in various kit configurations at higher prices.

Many of the on-line camera stores with good prices are a bit shady -- they often sell gray market goods that don't have the manufacturer's warranty. H1photo is different. Another on-line photo store with a good reputation is BeachCamera.com.
