I would recommend a Nikon D50 over a D40. Either then 18-55 or 18-70 would be a good kit lens. Also check B&H - if you shop around, stick to reputable camera shops like Ritz and B&H and a very small number of others.
Similar specs and price, but it can use all nikon AF lenses (and there are some nice ones). The D40 can only properly use AFS lenses, which is the motorized subset of AF lenses. The D40 is missing the mechanical drive linkage needed to operate the non-AFS autofocus lenses, otherwise all the Nikon digital bodies come with that feature.
I would get the Nikon over the Olympus solely for future lens selection. Image quality among any of the big manufacturers of DSLRs is not going to be an issue for most people. Olympus is improving in lens selection, but Nikon and Canon are unbeatable by other manufacturers for their variety of nice lenses.
