Yes, why not use new evidence instead to back up the data in that a higher than usual numbers of Saab's from late 90s and up have had oil sludge problems to the point where Saab has been made to extend the engine warranty and that many other car makers are having sludge issue and in some cases are backing down from long oil change intervals to a shorter one and where the "fine print" in the owners manual have become more gospel than a suggestion whenever the issue arise of a sludged up engine.
Yes, long oil changes are fine IF? the driver is aware of the consequences of his or her driving style and/or if the engine is burning oil or not and the oil used by any quick lube places.
The truth is that many and most drivers do just that, drive the car. It is a few die hards here and there that monitor the oil and consumption and so forth but the big grey masses, they just drive the car and trust that whoever service the car do it up to spec and let the driver know if something is wrong.
I just this week had a Volvo customer (99 S80) coming back after a year (to the day)with 8200 more miles since the last oil change and about 2 quarts oil left in the pan (7.1 q when changing).
That poor engine had no clue what it had done wrong to deserve a treatment like that.
If this had been the dual turbo engine, they probably would have had to change both turbos but luckily it wasn't.
Another customer wasn't as lucky and they had to replace both and drop the oil pan too, to clean out the sludge.
All these people having to shell out their own money for an engine replacement probably would have been ok with if someone had taken them by the ear and dragged them and their car to get an oil change done sooner than later.
