Thank you for your valuable advice. You are reminding us that taxi's, police and commerical vehicles, those who frequently tow trailers, drive mostly through dusty areas, have extensive ideling or trips less than 5-10 miles espcially in freezing temperatures should change their oil at the 5K interval. Now the rest of us can use the Saab extended change interval and save some money and the environment. This puts to rest the need to change oil at the 3K mark or less and in addition you remind us that Saab recommends oil supplement additives should not be used. ( I do not know of any auto maker who recommends using these additives). Thank you too for suggesting that oil levels need to be checked from time to time. Had your Volvo customer done so, his engine would have been much happier, certanily mine is. One last thing, are your absolutly sure the Saab "sludge problem" was the result of longer oil change schedules? Is it possible design flaws, PVC issues, or some other issue was at play? Several have reported on this Saab network, sludge problems even though they claimed frequent oil change intervals.
