Interesting point about the 99. I had a 1974 99ems, around the same time I was also driving BMW Bavarias and 2002s. The ems compared very favorably with the 2002; in fact it felt a lot more solid and was more reliable. Saab actually made the 99 into a world-class car; it just took until 1985 or so (when the 900 SPG's came out).

But by that time BMW had already gone upmarket and was about to come out with the M3. IMO Saab's big mistake came around 1988 or so by sticking with the 99/900 platform (Volvo did the same with the 140/240 series). By 1990 the 900 was pretty obsolete and expensive, and the new 900/9-3 wasn't an improvement.

Audi's don't do much for me; had a Coupe in the 80's that felt like a VW Dasher...i do like the A3, however, and wish it was 5k cheaper...
