I think the author is correct that Saab has squandered opportunities at every turn. They have always seemed to want people to discover their cars, trusting that car buyers are capable of understanding all the issues involved. If that were true, their cars would have sold like hotcakes over the years, especially late 80's for the c900 and mid-90's for the 9000.
Of course, it has helped Audi that their Quattro has been so successful on the racetrack, and that the car buying public associates 4WD with safety, not just performance.
So what has held Saab back, while Audi has surged ahead? After their forays into turbocharging, Saab seems to have become satisfied with small successes, like the anti-whiplash head restraint (sorry, but it could have been made to be comfortable with normal use), and the fascinating rotating copholders, instead of putting anything truly revolutionary into their cars. Until Saab says it wants to be a world leader in automotive technology (actually producing cars with exciting stuff, like the variable compression engine), I forsee more of the same.
