You mention a VW Beetle...
Having been behind the wheel of a '68 Beetle that did a partial head-on into a Volvo station wagon at about 30 mph, I can tell you firsthand that they can hold up reasonably well.
The front suspension on those things (a regular beetle, not a Super Beetle) was remarkably strong and it could take a hit, at least at moderate speeds. There were two transverse 2.5 inch torsion spring tubes connecting the vertical shock towers. These connected to the floor pan at four points.
Of course Beetles were not very safe cars, but the absence of an engine in front was not a huge issue, at least not in my accident. I could still open and close the doors and the gas tank didn't leak. The angle of the collision bent the floorpan so the car was a total, but it held up OK. Minor injuries only to my passenger and me.
