As others have said, there is Audacity. I use Amadeus (II) on my Mac - not free ($30), but quite powerful.
It has the capability to split music into tracks automatically, but the capability is hit or miss - it depends on finding gaps in the music. Sometimes it finds too many, and some recordings run two 'tracks' together - the joy of analog.
It also has the ability to clean up pops and cracks. Again, I don't use the automatic feature, as I find it too agressive, even with the available adjustments. I do use it to automatically find problems, and I listen and judge if it needs fixing.
Some observations from comments - my opinions only, no malice intended.
As to downloading MP3s, there is a lot on vinyl I have that isn't out there - some pretty arcane stuff from the 60's & 70's. And I've paid for it. I'm not big on file sharing as a concept from a copyright standpoint.
Yes, if you manually put in the track breaks, you need to listen to the music. Not all, as most tools allow you to 'see' the music, and you can also use the timings listed on the record label/insert/cover to get you close. But I really don't have a problem listening to the music - isn't that the idea? Yes, it takes about 40 minutes to copy it onto the computer, but I can go off and do other things in about 20-30 minute intervals - recording blank space at the end is easily edited out.
Then I'll spend another half-hour or so going through the recording, cleaning it up as necessary, splitting it into tracks, etc. I don't consider it work - I'm getting to know a record I may not have listened to in a decade or more. I can see having a fast, fully automatic system would be useful if you're doing this for money (as I know some folks do), but what's the use of listening to music quickly?
