In the case of the Vietnamese restaurant owner, many external things factor in: his newness in business and, perhaps, the country, his unfamiliarity with the language and customs, etc. But what if it is a native-born American with 25 years of business experience? What if the owner is far more wealthy than I am, say, for example, the owner of a large chain of auto dealerships or a physician? Am I always obligated? Why?
I, too, have rewritten checks when a store has been robbed and my original was trashed by the thief. But that has nothing to do with the owner's competence. If the owner calls and says "I misplaced the $100 bill you paid with yesterday," do I take him another one? Or am I obligated to make up for incompetence only in the case of checks and credit cards? Why?
What if I find an item which I am reasonably certain is priced incorrectly? For example, I was looking at a popular brand of fuel line cleaner in the local hardware store the other day and found it priced at about 50% of the normal price in the chain stores. Is it my obligation to take it to the register and say "I'd like to buy this, but your price is too low so let me pay you twice this much"? Why?
It's easy to say "Well, you'd want someone to do this to you if the situation were reversed," but we all regularly have different expectations than we do actions. For example, most parents have said to their children "You should always tell the truth," yet most of those same parents have lied to those same children (easter bunnies, santa claus, "sleeping" grandmothers in funeral homes, etc. etc.). Why?
So tell me, oh wise philosophers, where are the lines?
