I do consulting in the printing biz (mostly on big dollar machinery) but here's my take on the desktop stuff.
If the need is for "business graphics" and everyday printing then just about anything will do. Those aren't color-critical and all the printers do a good job. Inkjet, laser, solid ink, all are fine. Ink jet is the most expensive to own and ink prices are ridiculous. There is about a 20X markup in ink.
If the big use is to print photos, then an Epson is probably the best bet, IMHO, one with 6 or even 8 inks. However, while their piezo heads don't clog much in use, you do have to use the printer regularly. OTOH, Epson heads are much more durable than HP's thermal heads, which is why HP cartridges have the head in them. They just don't last all that long and are still prone to clogging unless used a lot. FWIW, *all* Canon, HP, and Lexmark printers use the same head technology. Their inks are proprietary, though. HP's inks are the best of the thermal head guys, but I think Epson's inks are more durable for photo applications.
If photos aren't the prime consideration, look at the solid ink printers from Xerox. Their Phaser line has some nice machines that cost a bit more to buy but are much cheaper to run. You use solid ink "crayons" that are melted as needed and they do a very nice job, even for photos, and you get more images per dollar. And there are no empty cartridges to deal with, either. Xerox also has some nice laser printers that use a new type of toner that does a good job, also much cheaper to run that ink jets.
How it will be used should drive the decision, not just "I need a new printer." I presently have a Kodak ink jet for photos, but day to day I use a Xerox color laser.
