There's not a lot of detail in my post... Posted by adl6009 [Email] (#2526) [Profile/Gallery] (more from adl6009) on Mon, 1 Oct 2007 07:06:16 In Reply to: Re: Huge range of options..., Will L, Sun, 30 Sep 2007 15:57:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
but I was just hit with this idea that morning, and there is always the danger that I ramble on incessantly about extraneous stuff. Watch out, here I go-
I used to travel to Vermont quite a bit back in the day. The summer after I graduated high school I got my private pilots rating. So it was the years following that, around 1974, that my friends and I would fly from Long Island to Mt. Snow. Now I can look back and see how stupid that was. It was great fun but who except a dopey 20 year old would get up early, fly 2 or 3 hours, ski all day, then get back into the plane just as it was getting dark and fly it all the way back home? Hey, now-a days I would need a period of recovery just for the getting up early part.
Then in the '80s I rented a ski house with some friends at Snow. I had my 1979 MGB then. I used to take the back roads up, avoiding the interstates whenever I could. This was always in the winter, So I never got to see the foliage back then. It was very nice country, up the Taconic Parkway, route 7 through the Berkshires and finally getting to the house. Some weekends I wouldn't even ski, I would drive around instead.
In recent years my wife and I have taken October vacations and trips for the foliage. Right after I got my '99 9-5 we took a drive to the Smokey Mtns. That was great. Skyline drive and all. We did Virginia, DC and Philly one year. I have to say Philly was unexpectedly nice. That was in the '02 arc I think. (We still have both cars :-)
Anyway it looks like this year there will be no trip, just how it goes. But next year will be the big event. If we do the New England wedding the week or 2 after will be spent driving around and relaxing.
We still live on Long Island, so Conn, Ma, Vt and Ri (?) would be the primary areas if interest. It has to have something for the 20 somethings to keep busy and something for us 50 somethings to rest on. It also has to have a kitchen Gorden Ramsay wouldn't flip out on.
Thanks for letting me run on like that. It was a nice walk down memory lane for me. If you can recommend a great place we would appreciate it.
