They claim that the batteries are good for several years but the R&R cost is about $2000 to $2500. Lotta dough to spend, but OTOH the only real running costs are tires and brakes. No gas, no oil, no coolant, no exhaust systems, etc. They claim the real cost is down well under 10 cents a mile, lots less than gas engines.
I guess it depends on how you do the calculations.
I DK about the added issue of an increased number of power plants. But absent a huge investment in battery technology I still don't see plug-in electrics being used for more than commuter vehicles. Which is all this car is, with its 80-mile range.
I'd still tend to go for a Smart car if I needed a micro-car. More versatile. The biggest challenge is getting people out of big cars and thinking about having a car for a certain purpose--commuting--rather than a general purpose car. That'll take a while, and may not work for enough people to make this concept take off.
My bigger concern is safety in this car. There are no crush zones to absorb energy in a collision, which is a real problem.
