I know our 9Ks are great in snow, but I want the ability to get someplace regardless of weather, and be able to stop and steer effectively at all times. You give some of that up with typical all season tires. I routinely do longish trips across northern New England and New York in winter and definitely want tires that can deal with snow and help keep me safe.
I've driven in snow all my life, but if I have to go 300 miles in a snowstorm it's a lot better trip if the car is wearing the right shoes for the weather.
As someone else noted, avoiding one accident pays for the tires, in terms of your deductible.
