It comes down to saving some money on design and tooling, and ability to manufacture on a single line. If certain key dimensions of the floor pan are the same and length/width of the car are within certain dimensions, multiple cars sharing the same "platform" can be made on the same conveyors. The lifters, hangars, and floor conveyors all accommodate the models in the platform. You can come up with sedans, hatches, wagons, 4-banger models, v6 models, sporty cars, and grandma cars that all fit into the same "platform". It's not worth getting hung up on platform.
