Rod,
First of all, I'm glad that you survived this relatively unscathed - you are very lucky!
You forgot to include the cost of a new rear wheel and transferring the components to the new frame in the tally (unless you are going to do it yourself). I would also carefully check the bottom bracket and pedals, the one showing looks like it's damaged.
You wrote: "this reinforces my suspicions that bike lanes are not a good idea - car drivers tend to give cyclists much more room if there is not a white line between them and the bike."
Maybe this is true where you live, but it is absolutely untrue in my experience cycling in the Chicago area. Illinois recently passed a "three feet of clearance when passing a bike" law, but most drivers are unaware of this and it seems that some frequently come close enough to me to touch - and I limit my cycling to daylight at non-busy times, mostly on weekends. One of my friends was not so lucky with an old lady driving a big SUV. Having an extra foot (center of a two-foot lane) of built-in distance seems like an excellent idea to me and others - my town has just finished painting bike lane markings on many of the main roads I previously would not have even considered for cycling (and I guess that's the point).
